Bakuleyé means in the language of the Yorubá religion:
a cane that comes to wake up the deities in the vault. However
if we see this in an abstract form we realize that this
proverbial "cane " was taken by a group of Havanans to wake
up popular Cuban music. New ideas!
This young group, that was founded in Havana in December
of 1996, possesses musical potential that can be seen as
evidences at one of their live shows. Latin jazz, boleros,
ballads, bachatas, Cuban Songs and other influences are
incorporated into an original style of Cuban Timba. Their
sound can be described as the force of the Caribbean and
Latin America, but mainly of Cuba. The bands leading author,
Pedro Pablo Pérez Vargas, composes almost all the songs
that this group interprets, always keeping in mind the essence
of Cuban music and, starting from that point , fuses musical
elements of other countries into the sound.
Pedro Pablo, director of BAKULEYÉ, was born in Santiago
de Cuba and comes from a family of great sensibility. His
father, a guitarist and composer, was the founder member
of the Trova Santiaguera, and that fact presupposes , that
during childhood, Pedro was surrounded by a musical atmosphere.
An ermpiric creator, very skilled when capturing his ideas,
and with organizational experience and musical direction.
He has been a guarantee that has worked for groups like
Paulito y su Elite, Tamayo y su Salsa AM , among others.
In 1997 BAKULEYÉ gained the title of „More popular Nobel
Orchestrates „,and that demonstrated their acceptance from
the Cuban public.
Novel orchestrations, interesting lyrics, crisscross harmonies,
and contagious melodies conform the sound of BAKULEYÉ, and
that has turned out to be attractive for the followers of
Cuban Popular Music.
